Before anyone can participate in a sport as competitive and taxing as dragon boat racing, one must first get into decent shape. Every year around March to April (depending on when the actual Dragon Boat Festival is, as the holiday is based on the lunar calendar), some fifty odd students from the MTC begin the daily ritual of getting up at the crack of dawn to exercise at the NTNU track. Here, the weak and the meek are slowly weeded out under Darwin's principle of "Survival of the Fittest," as day by day the training is gradually intensified...

Once the MTC has officially registered all participating team members and purchased their insurance (not that it's needed, of course!), and after the race organizers have given the green light to allow teams to hit the water, the REAL training begins! The two important skills of stroke technique (i.e., learning how to use the entire body to paddle as opposed to relying solely on the arms) and rhythm (timing it so that all 20 oars hit the water as one) are taught and practiced. A mantra is learned and sung: LONG and DEEP and HARD...

Although the International Dragon Boat Race is the primary one that the MTC participates in, Bitan has always been the preferable river to compete in due to its clean water and beautiful scenery. As there is no special division for foreign teams, the MTC competes against local teams from Taiwan. Here is where we first learn if all that hard work and training has paid off...
