Mike Rogero's FAQ - Some Questions I'm Often Asked

Q. How long have you been in Asia?

A. I've called Taiwan home for over 14 years now. Really amazing to think how fast time has flown by. When put in perspective, I've spent most of my adult life in Asia and in many ways I am more Chinese then American in my thinking and attitudes

Q. Why did you come to Asia?

A. There is number of things the brought me here. My belief that most of what is exciting that is going to happen in the 21st. Century, is going to happen here is probably the main reason I came. I also have a love for the exotic and China is definitely that! I also have an incredible respect for the Chinese work ethic and habit of saving for the future and one's children both of which are very different from the America I grew up in.

Q. Where are you from? Where do you call home?

A. Oh, that's a good one! I'm a mutt and don't feel like I have any place to call "home". Places I've hung my hat are Maine, Georgia, Idaho, Washington, New Jersey Delaware, North Carolina, Florida, Washington DC, and Taiwan. I've lived in Taiwan longer then almost anywhere else.

Q. Have you traveled much?

A.
Travel is one of my favorite experiences. While you wouldn't know it from how I dress at work, I love traveling as a backpacker and have a full shelf of Lonely Planet's to dream on. So far I've been to 32 countries on my goal of traveling to 100 in this life, they include: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Czechoslovakia, England, Egypt, France, Holland, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Portugal, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Uruguy, Vietnam, and all over the United States.

Q. Where are your favorite places of the countries you've visited?

A.
Gosh, another hard one! If I had to choose it would be - Khujaraho, India; Chamonix France; Koh Pangyang, Thailand; and the north coast of Bali, Indonesia. I of course love Taipei and the mountains of Taiwan! Russia is the place I have previously visited that I most want to return to and I am contemplating a cross-Russia motorcycle tour as my next big trip.

Q. What do you do?

A. I last ran the Taiwan branch office of Ion Global, a subsidiary of ChinadotCom Corporation. I was responsible for all operations for our 75 person office and projects for a Global 2000 client list including Oracle, Cisco, Mercedes Benz, General Motors, Opel, Motorola, Nestle, P&G, and Cetra. Frankly I loved my job and helping transform business in Asia into part of the digital economy is really exciting, however at the end of 2002 it was time to do some things for me and I set off on a trip around the world, started the process of getting a Master's degree and picking up a third language.

Q. What kind of music do you like?

A.
Funny but I've pretty much lost my interest in music as pleasure since I came to Taiwan. Since I came, I usually listen to Chinese pop music with the main intent being to keep my language skills sharp. As such, music has unfortunately taken on an aspect of work where I'm trying to practice Chinese as opposed to enjoy the music. In a previous life (before coming to Taiwan) I enjoyed Don Henley, Dire Straits, Wu Si-kai, Wu-Bai, Chui Jian, and The Grateful Dead. I was online when Jerry died. That was definitely one of those unsung days where history is made. The net started to amaze me that night!

Q. Have I forgot to tell you something?

A.
Can't tell you the answer to this one, but would love to have some feedback. If there is something you would liked to have had me answer here, please drop me a note.
