A Perfect Day in Paradise! - Continues....
Krabi, Thailand- May 18,
2000
Today
the fun on the menu was canoeing through mangrove swamps in kayaks. Seems
everything I love does revolve around water...perhaps I should date more
Aquarius's ?:-p
When I was young I also kayaked in Idaho where the rivers are renowned
for their wildness. Those kayaks could flip upside down and then come
back up with ease, so one could sit in the river upside down and float!
Thailand's kayaks aren't as fun but today revolved around taking the canoes
through caves which were filled with stalactites and often were just barely
higher then your head. Many of the caverns I actually had to lay down
stretched out in the boat to be able to fit through.
The group I was with rowed through cave after cave. We even ended up in
a canyon that was filled with monkeys eating their lunch which it seemed
they were willing to share with me though I didn't take them up on the
offer. (ever seen what a monkey's half eaten mango looks like...uggh!
Need to teach these guys some table manners). We also saw something that
was called a water jumper which looked like a long toad with no back legs,
but I swear it could jump across the water at 50 km/hr. It was so fast
I couldn't take a movie of it!
On the way back we stopped at this botanical garden where there were some
really old mango trees surrounded by waterfalls cascading down. There
were a few ice-cream vendors there and I think I tried ALL of the different
flavors. Though I hesitate to guess what the names of any of those flavors
might have been.
On the way back to the hotel I rode on the back of the truck which seemed
to amuse the Thai's we passed on the way. I don't think they expected
to have a truck pass and have this white guy hanging off the back smiling
at them. Got to keep the locals on their toes!.
As I sit here eating what is probably my 4th lobster since arriving in
Thailand this week, can't begin to remember how long it has been since
I've been this relaxed. Three huge meals a day, each day with a nap and
yet another swim in the ocean under a full moon does a lot for the soul.
I'm sure I've lost a number of wrinkles in just these few days alone.
How can one NOT love a trip to Thailand...they always seem to be like
this...
